“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!” (Isaiah 5:20-21, ESV)

Of interest regarding the statement referenced above by the Sovereign Grace Council of Elders, Jenn Grovers, a former member of a Sovereign Grace church, had this to say:

August 5th, 2013 at 2:38 pm

You know, I made the same mistake that the SGM pastors made. In the controversy over whether or not they should issue such a resolution, I overlooked the fact that the SGM Council of Elders does not have the authority to issue such a resolution and that they have also disregarded the rules of discipline set out in the Book of church Order.

Per the book of church order, the council of elders is responsible for:

1)The Appointment of Committees
2)The proposal and approval of changes to the Statement of Faith.
3)The Proposal and approval of changes to the SG Book of Church Order.
4)The confirmation of the members of the SG Court of Appeal.
5)Adjudication of charges against a Region.
6)Election of the members of the Executive Committee.
7) Confirmation of the Executive Director of the Leadership Team.
8) Approval of the Ordination Standards and Exams
9)Affirmation of the SG Yearly Budget.

In presenting, considering, and voting on this statement, they have exceeded the areas of responsibility as detailed in the Book of Church Order. They had no authority to vote on such a statement.

Second the discipline, as detailed in the Book of Church order applies to leaders and local elders. Brent is neither. Furthermore, any discipline should be preceded by a trial per the Book of Church Order.

So, as expected, they are no better at following the new polity than they were the old polity and a new polity has not subdued abusive authority.

Here are links to a few posts by Brent Detweiler, a former top leader of Sovereign Grace Ministries, which are quite damaging to C.J. Mahaney and other SGM pastors named in a sexual abuse lawsuit:
